Married for 22 years, communication experts Carolyn Shadle, PhD, and her husband John Meyer, PhD, have cultivated an immense passion for the human-animal bond and helping to improve the veterinarian-client-patient relationship.

In this episode of The Vet Blast Podcast, the couple talks with Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, about why empathy is so important in veterinary medicine and share some of their lecture highlights for the upcoming virtual Fetch dvm360 conference.

The couple tells Dr. Christman that their lectures will focus on the science behind the human-animal bond, the economic impact of the ever-evolving human-animal bond on pet owners, plus how to express empathy to your clients both verbally and nonverbally .

“Pet owners come to veterinarians quite often stressed. One of the champions of communication is showing empathy. It’s not easy.… It takes time and a different way of listening to hear the feeling behind the words,” says Dr. Shadle.
