Opportunity offers a launching platform for mass market adoption in the US of company’s digital diagnosis and treatment tool
GekkoVet—a Finnish company featuring a digital diagnosis and treatment tool—has announced its participation as a showcase finalist in the Animal Health, Nutrition & Technology Innovation Summit in Boston, Massachusetts on June 22, 2022.
According to a company release,1 GekkoVet’s tool is based on over 50,000 pages of clinical source material to assist veterinarians in selecting from a list of clinical symptoms to return over 28,000 different symptom-diagnosis combinations. The proprietary GekkoVet algorithm returns the diagnoses list in probability order to enhance the quality and speed of clinical decision-making, especially at a time when the veterinary field is confronting extreme staff shortages. In fact, research has displayed that even with new veterinary graduates expected over the next decade, a shortage of about 15,000 veterinarians will still exist by 2030.2
"In the face of severe staff shortages that aren't going anywhere soon, our industry has no choice but to evolve to survive. For too long we've relied on Google and stacks of books for our reference needs. Everything else is accessible from a few taps on a cell phone—except clinical (decision making) tools,” expressed Mike Petty, DVM, owner and veterinarian of Arbor Pointe Veterinary Hospital in Canton, Michigan, in the release.
"GekkoVet isn't here to replace the experience and knowledge of veterinarians. We are here to be their right hand. Nobody can recall thousands of pages of source material, instead of Googling it we're here to help clinicians Gekko it to improve efficiency,” expressed GekkoVet co-founder and veterinarian Johanna Majamaa, VMD.
The GekkoVet team is currently searching for investors in the US market and anticipates presenting the future of digital decision-making at the upcoming Animal Health Innovation Summit.
