How to Safely Treat Unknown Eye Problems

You can always safely treat eyeballs with topical antibiotics, glaucoma medication, and lubricants, says Jennifer Welser, DVM, DACVO, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

If you have a corneal problem and you don't know exactly what it is, you can't hurt it with a topical antibiotic, Dr. Welser says. Lubrication and protection, depending on what's happening with the eye, will also do no harm. Sometimes with early eye disease, if you're not sure what's happening and if you think there's glaucoma, using glaucoma medications is also a safe bet.
