Khursheed Mama, DVM, DACVAA, professor of veterinary anesthesiology at Colorado State University, says preparation and calibration are the two most important steps to take for anesthetic safety.
Veterinarians need to prepare and plan for the patient undergoing anesthesia by taking a good history, conducting a good physical exam, and doing additional tests and other diagnostics necessary for an anesthetic plan. Veterinarians also need to check their equipment, make sure everything is working, and make sure everything is calibrated.
