ST. LOUIS, MO.—Nestle Purina PetCare introduces Joint Mobility brand Canine Formula as part of its Purina Veterinary Diets®. The formula was created to help improve mobility in arthritic dogs. The formula's blend of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids is a natural source of glucosamine and antioxidants that work to reduce enzymes involved in cartilage breakdown.
The product is created for adult and senior dogs and maintains a high protein-to-calorie ratio, the company says. The formula can significantly reduce the levels of prostaglandin (PGE2) and joint enzymes MMP-2 and MMP-9, resulting in a positive effect on joint health at the chondrocyte level, the company explains.
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the mediators of cartilage degradation by delivering effective quantities of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid to joints. Feeding a diet rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids alters the fatty acid substrates present in cell membranes, synovial fluid and plasma, the company adds. Management of canine osteoarthritis is multifaceted and includes a combination of body weight and body condition management, nutrition, controlled exercise, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication to control pain and inflammation and disease-modifying osteoarthritis agents.
