You may want to think again before reaching for that slimy bar of soap. According to a study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection (February 2006), cake soap remains constantly damp in hospitals where staff members use it frequently. Therefore, it's possible for bacteria transferred to the soap to survive, multiply, and spread to other hand-washers. In the study, researchers tested 12 samples of cake soap and 10 samples of liquid soap for contamination. Each of the cake soap samples were heavily contaminated while none of the liquid soap samples were.
