SCVMA survey says majority haven't changed protocols
December 1st 2003Los Angeles-The Southern California Veterinary Medical Association's (SCVMA) Pulse magazine reports that 64.4 percent of member DVMs surveyed recommend routine vaccinations annually for dogs. Another 31 percent recommend routine vaccinations every three years for dogs.
FDA draft risk assessment says clones likely safe, but cites animal health concerns
December 1st 2003Rockville, Md.-In the wake of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) draft risk assessment on the safety of animal cloning, the FDA's Veterinary Medical Advisory Committee (VMAC) agreed that products generated from clones would likely be safe to eat but some panel members expressed concern on the risks to animal welfare.
Chronic renal insufficiency in the cat: A new look at an old disease
December 1st 2003Chronic renal insufficiency is a common problem in cats. Many cats will live for years with very few clinical signs while others will progress more rapidly. Unfortunately, most will ultimately succumb to the disease. Conventional monitoring of these cats has included periodic blood chemistries and complete blood cell counts assessing for: progression of azotemia, alterations in electrolyte and acid-base balance, changes in the calcium and phosphorous levels and progression of non-regenerative anemia. Long-term management of these cases is typically aimed at correcting electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities, supplementing water soluble vitamins, alleviating gastrointestinal side effects and controlling serum phosphorous levels. Wildfires: rescue teams save countless lives
December 1st 2003In what's been dubbed the "worst and costliest disaster in California history," merging wildfires scorched more than 800,000 acres and killed 20 people and countless wild animals in late October and early November. Veterinary volunteers and animal care organizations have stretched resources, giving selflessly to save as many four-legged lives as possible, officials report.
