The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) was launched in late 2010 and has grown to be a global leader in swine medicine education. The Center, a public – private partnership between Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and AMVC Management Services, is the only formal Center of Excellence for swine medicine education in the United States and perhaps the world. The key mission of SMEC is to demonstrate (live and/or digitally) every clinical technique in swine medicine practice or research and provide students a place to practice those techniques. Concurrently, the center incorporates traditional knowledge-based curricula to teach students the rest of the skills needed for practice including business, finance, epidemiology, swine specific pharmacology, vaccinology, welfare, and other topics. The Center emphasizes on-farm clinical training in functional production facilities over lecture training when possible but accesses farms in creative ways including with live video connections as circumstances allow.
