-- The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is adding a second "Focus" continuing-education session this year, offering two days of lectures and a day of laboratories on equine ophthalmology in October.

The Focus on Ophthalmology program includes lectures Oct. 1 and 2 at Raleigh's Marriott Crabtree Valley, and rotating wet labs Oct. 3 at North Carolina State University. Buses will take attendees to the labs.

Two top experts in ophthalmology and one private practitioner will present 12 hours of lectures the first two days.

Dennis E. Brooks, DVM, Dipl. ACVO, PhD, of the University of Florida veterinary college faculty, will cover the equine examination, corneal physiology, disease and surgery, equine glaucoma and posterior segment disease.

Brian Gilger, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVO, Dipl. ABT, of the NCSU veterinary school faculty, will cover diagnosis and treatment of the equine eyelid and adnexal conditions, diagnosis and treatment of equine recurrent uveitis and uveal disease, lens physiology, disease and cataract surgery.

And Ann E. Dwyer, DVM, owner of Genesee Valley Equine Clinic in Scottsville, N.Y., will discuss ophthalmology for the general equine practitoner.

Brooks and Gilger will lead the lab sessions, with the assistance of several ACVO diplomats and ophthalmology residents, including Dr. Mary Lassaline Utter of the University of Pennsylvania; Drs. Richard McMullen, Allison Clode, Jay Harrington and Diana Pate of NCSU; and Drs. Caryn Plummer and Kathy Barrie of the University of Florida.

The AAEP normally holds one Focus program each year, but decided to add the ophthalmology session this year.

Its Focus on the Foot program, announced previously, will be July 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio.
