WASHINGTON - 12/19/2006 - The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is taking applications for this year's fellowship program in Washington.

Up to three selected participants will spend one year in the nation's capital beginning in August and receive a $65,000 stipend to work with Congress or homeland security to influence and learn public policy. "Fellows work not just as observers but as contributing participants who provide science-based knowledge and information to the public policy-making process," AVMA officials say.

The fellowships are designed to usher AVMA members into the governmental process and offer an opportunity to be on the front lines of federal decision-making. Fellows network with government leaders, newsmakers and media, AVMA officials say.

Candidates must be AVMA members and U.S. citizens. Due to the sensitive nature of the positions, candidates also must pass a background test. In addition, applicants should possess excellent writing and presentation skills and have varied social and scientific interests as reflected by their involvement in professional organizations.

Applications are due Feb. 10. For more information or to apply, contact Program and Administrative Coordinator Robert Hay Jr. at (800) 321-1473 ext. 3208, or e-mail rhay@avma.org.
