Juggling a full-time job, online classes, and a husband sounds complicated. Online classes demand a lot of self-control and dedication, but since my goal was to become a licensed technician, making time for lectures and written assignments was easy. My husband was very supportive, and his encouragement helped me through times where I struggled through classes and stressed myself out with thoughts of failure. It was hard for me to remember things the way I did when I was in college more than 20 years ago, and that was my main source of frustration.
My work schedule helped make it easier. Some days I would work 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., other days 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. This gave me time to sleep in or a chance to attend an online lecture. I would also set aside time to do schoolwork, no matter what.
When I needed a break from school, I'd put down my textbook and pick up a work of fiction: either a murder mystery or scientific thriller. I've been reading since I was 4 years old, and that's the hobby that gives me the most pleasure. I also picked up relaxing vibes from my three miniature schnauzers. Having them around certainly lowered my blood pressure many times.
The things that balanced my life outside of work included going to museums and the ballet and to dinner with friends. My friends were always there to lend support, to make me laugh, or to offer a different perspective on life when I needed it. They assured me that I was doing the right thing by going back to school and striving to be credentialed and that I should be proud of myself no matter what my grades were.
