Canine escape artist breaks out of veterinary clinic

Here’s a story that will make you want to double-check your veterinary clinic’s locks at night—although for one pooch, locks were no bother.

After three late-night escape attempts from Best Friends Animal Hospital in Medford, Ore., a German shepherd named Jack finally found freedom. The Medford Mail Tribune reports that Jack managed to pull open his kennel, trip the deadbolt on the clinic’s back door, and pull down the handle to get outside.

Along the way, he set off three motion-detector alarms and managed to rip open four bags of food. Jack then wandered seven miles from the clinic and headed in the general direction of his home, where he tried to get into a woman’s house. The homeowner called an animal control officer who took the dog to a nearby shelter. He was reunited with his family soon after.

Are your practice’s kennels and exterior doors secure? You might want to take another look just to be safe. And while you’re at it, make sure all dog food is out of patients’ reach.
