DENVER, COLO. — A year's worth of data on dog bites is in the hands of a research firm to provide a fresh analysis for the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).
Data collection began months ago, when the CVMA asked animal-welfare personnel to complete a detailed survey for each dog bite case they handled, noting the circumstances, age of victim and dog breed.
The aim is to put dog bites into context instead of looking solely at the breed, says CVMA Executive Director Ralph Johnson.
To ensure objectivity, CVMA and its partner in the project, the Coalition for Living Safely With Dogs, hired a third party to analyze the data so results don't appear to favor a specific outcome, Johnson says.
