Episode 79: Oral microbiome and the future of veterinary dentistry

During an interview on The Vet Blast Podcast, Jan Bellows, DVM, DAVDC, DABVP, FAVD, shared an anecdote illustrating the evolution of small-animal dentistry and the possibility that oral microbiome research brings. Recalling a time 25 years ago when a group of veterinary professionals were asked about their greastest challenges, he said:

"The 2 biggest problems were stomatitis and tooth resorption. We still didn't know at that time what causes [them] and we didn't know how to best treat [them] other than a lot of extractions. Now, there's a chance that we can diagnose it early, and hopefully with a microbiome [test], maybe we can change that, and maybe that's part of the etiology...I had never thought it would come in my lifetime, and I'm glad it's coming in my lifetime."
