FDA cautions consumers about Texas Tripe raw pet food recall
The FDA is advising pet owners not to feed their dogs and cats certain lots of the companys raw pet food after samples from some of the lots tested positive for Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes.
In early July, following a routine state investigation and a follow-up investigation by the FDA, raw pet food manufacturer Texas Tripe, Inc. recalled a number of its products due to potential contamination with Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes.
According to the FDA website, 16 of 23 Texas Tripe product samples tested by the Office of the Texas State Chemist (OTSC) were positive for one or both of the bacteria. After corrective actions were taken to prevent further contamination, the FDA investigation revealed that some samples from additional lots of the products previously tested by OTSC again tested positive for Salmonella, L. monocytogenes or both.
These findings led the company to recall 35 lots each of 23 Texas Tripe products, as indicated in the table below (list current as of August 14). This week, the FDA is also sounding an alarm, advising consumers who are in possession of any of these products to throw away the food immediately because these bacteria can pose a serious health threat for both pets and people.

According to the release, FDA findings also indicated contamination of the following sampled products that are not included in the recall:
> Texas Tripe Chicken Blend – Lot 19196-6
> Texas Tripe Pork Blend – Lot 19190-09
> Texas Tripe Beef Blend – Lot 19191-05
The recalled products have been distributed throughout much of the country, including (per the FDA's website) in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The products are sold frozen in 20- and 40-pound cases, each of which contain multiple plastic pouches. Product lot codes are printed on the cases but not on the individual sealed plastic pouches. Thus, consumers who have discarded the shipping packaging have no way to know whether the product currently being stored in their freezer is among the recalled products.
