Five animal survivors honored at ACVIM event

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) honored five animals at its twelfth annual Animal Survivor Media Event at the 2012 ACVIM Forum on May 31 in New Orleans. These animals overcame life-threatening illnesses and beat the odds because of advances in veterinary internal medicine, the ACVIM reports. The five survivors, all from the New Orleans area, are pictured below. To learn more about these warrior animals, visit weareanimalsurvivors.org.

1. Angel. This Carolina yellow dog survived lymphoma through chemotherapy. She's now in complete remission leading a happy, healthy life.

2. Bailey. She lost her front left leg to bone cancer, but the mastiff therapy dog is now in remission and back in action working with those in need.

3. Camille. This female shorthaired cat was trapped during Hurricane Katrina and suffered hepatic lipidosis from starvation. She found a home and is now well-fed.

4. Penny. After suffering from a gastric ulcer and septic peritonitis, this Labrador retriever recovered and is back to her the active lifestyle.

5. Rocky and the New Orleans Police Department horses. These horses suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They survived and can once again watch over the streets of New Orleans.
