Free diabetes management tools are now available to veterinary clinics
Education materials and starter kits to help clients manage diabetes in their pets are accessible through the Diabetes PetCare Alliance

Veterinary clinics can receive access to free downloadable diabetes education materials and no-cost starter diabetes management kits for clients with pets diagnosed with the condition, by enrolling in the Diabetes PetCare Alliance program. The program—now in its 10th year—is a partnership between Merck Animal Health, Pro Plan Veterinary Diets and Zoetis that aims to support patients diagnosed with diabetes.
In the US, an estimated 1 in 300 adult canines and 1 in 230 cats are living with diabetes.2 Although the disease is not curable, the earlier a diagnosis can be made—and the more educated owners are—the better the odds of pets living long, healthy lives.1,2
Clinics can enroll in the Diabetes PetCare Alliance program from September 1, 2024, to Oct. 31, 2024, at usa.petdiabetesmonth.com. Clients whose pets are newly diagnosed with diabetes between November 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, are also eligible to receive the free kits in acknowledgement of November as Pet Diabetes Month.
The prognosis for diabetes is positive if met with an early diagnosis and adequate treatment including therapy, and dietary and lifestyle changes. Proper management tools are important in giving pet owners confidence as they care for their pets, according to the alliance.
The starter diabetes management kit includes the following items:
- One AlphaTRAK3 Blood Glucose Monitoring System from Zoetis
- One 6 lb bag of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DM Dietetic Management Feline Formula or 6 lb bag of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Fiber Balance Canine Formula
- One 10 mL vial of Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) from Merck Animal Health
Merck Animal Health, Pro Plan Veterinary Diets and Zoetis formed the Diabetes PetCare Alliance in 2014 to help enable long-term successful management of pets with diabetes by raising awareness among owners and facilitating the screening of at least 2500 new pets during Pet Diabetes Month.
