Phoenix-Merial says that a survey of veterinarians taken at the recently concluded American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) meeting here shows that roundworm/hookworm infection, flea allergy dermatitis and heartworm are the three diseases dogs will suffer from most this spring and summer.
The sample size included 104 veterinary professionals attending the meeting,the company says. Of the veterinarians responding, 60 percent cited roundworm/hookwormas a disease dogs will suffer from most this spring and summer. Flea allergydermatitis was listed by 59 percent of respondents, while 55 percent saidhookworms.
When asked what the top concerns for dog owners will be, heartworm toppedthe charts with 60 percent of respondents, while flea allergy dermatitiswas mentioned by 50 percent of veterinarians and 38 percent said West NileVirus, even though the risk to dogs is considered minimal.
The survey also shows the topics asked about most frequently include:behavioral, 48 percent; fleas, 47 percent; diet/weight, 43 percent; ticks,28 percent; heartworm, 17 percent; intestinal parasites, 10 percent; andmosquitoes, 9 percent.
In addition, 62 percent of the respondents do not believe pet ownersare aware of the risk of their pets transmitting zoonotic disease.
