New veterinary pharmacy certificate available

The Board of Pharmacy Technician Specialties (BPTS) announced it is launching a Veterinary Pharmacy Certificate. The new specialized credential will be the first of its kind for recognizing technicians who are providing animal pharmaceutical care.

"We are excited to provide pharmacy technicians with a unique opportunity to distinguish themselves and their specialized knowledge as it relates to veterinary prescriptions," said Mike Johnston, CPhT-Adv, founder and chief executive officer of BPTS, in an organizational release.¹ "Many pharmacy technicians play a critical role in providing veterinary pharmaceutical care and now they can be recognized for doing so."

According to the release,¹ candidate must be an active certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) through either the National Healthcare Association (NHA) or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The candidate must also have completed a 1 year of 1,000 hours of supervised pharmacy experience related to veterinary prescriptions or completed a BPTS-recognized Training Program for Veterinary Pharmacy.

Candidates will need to take an online exam of 60 multiple-choice questions for 90 minutes. It can be completed anywhere and is available 24/7. Once the candidate passes the exam, there is not requirement for it to be renewed. The exam will cost a fee of $49 and includes 1 complimentary retake if needed.²

BPTS has an already approved Veterinary Pharmacy Certificate Program for Pharmacy Technicians, which is offered by PowerPak.
