Vet Online Supply, Inc. recently launched the first round of pet products containing cannabidiol to help treat pain associated with arthritis, digestive issues, and more.
Vet Online Supply, Inc., an online reseller of premium veterinary supplies to US veterinary hospitals and mobile services, has begun the launch of its new cannabis-based pet product line. Additional cannabis-based products will be released in the coming months.
“The pet market is changing and canabidiol [CBD] has gained acceptability,” said Vet Online Supply Director Matt Scott. “The presence and regulatory role of the endocannabinoid system in all animals has been confirmed by scientific studies.”
Endocannabinoids are produced by both humans and animals to regulate various physiologic roles and act on specific receptors. According to research, activation of these receptors with phytocannabinoids—which occur naturally in the cannabis plant—could be helpful to treat underlying issues.
“Cannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol, have the potential to treat various medical problems, in a nontoxic way,” Scott said.
The first products to become available are CBD Pet Supplement Drops and Pure Hemp Oil Pet Treats. Both are intended to help pets with arthritis, immune compromise, stress responses, aggression, and digestive issues.
The company notes that CBD hemp also can be useful in treating pain associated with acute ailments like sprains and strains, torn ligaments, and bone breaks, as well as during postoperative care to reduce swelling, pain, and stiffness.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical compound in cannabis, is what causes the psychoactive high people experience from marijuana and is rarely used in products made for pets.
“No study has ever reported CBD is harmful to pets, but rather it is beneficial in many ways,” Scott said. “Not all, but most, of the edible canine cannabis treats are virtually THC-free, completely nonpsychoactive and nontoxic to pets.”
