Organization asks veterinary community to help flood victims

More than 3,400 pets have been displaced from--or their homes have threatened by--floods in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana, according to estimates from Feeding Pets of the Homeless, an organization that collects and distributes pet food to food banks and soup kitchens. Emergency shelters such as high schools and churches are available for displaced residents in flooded cities and volunteers and local humane society shelters are caring for their displaced pets.

"Each community is trying to handle the situation as best they can," says Genevieve Frederick, the founder and executive director of Feeding Pets of the Homeless in Carson City, Nev. "We're calling on as many veterinarians in the flooded areas as we can to join us in helping the displaced families with pets by collecting and providing pet food."
