Baton Rouge, La.
-- A successful surgery on a bleeding tumor in a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever earned the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine $100,000 in thanks from the dog's owners.
Dewey and Gigi Corley brought their dog, Darby, to LSU graduates Dr. Brad Everson and Dr. Steven Everson in Shreveport, where it was discovered during an exploratory surgery that Darby had a bleeding tumor, indicating cancer. The veterinarians were able to stop the bleeding and had Darby transferred to the veterinary teaching hospital, where the dog's spleen, left kidney and an adrenal tumor were removed. The pet is back home with her family.
The successful treatment resulted in what the school says is the largest scholarship endowment from a client in the college's history.
The endowment will establish the Dr. Steven D. Everson and Dr. Bradley S. Everson Honorary Endowed Scholarship, which will provide a $5,000 scholarship to a student in 2009 based on financial need and scholastic aptitude, according to the college. The Corleys also have pledged additional annual gifts. The first scholarship will be awarded in April.
