Use these three fast facts to remind pet owners about the importance of rabies vaccination,
When you're talking about the importance of rabies vaccinations with pet owners, use these fast facts to reinforce the value of vaccinations and educate pet owners about safety issues:
1. Bats, foxes and skunks are common carriers of the rabies virus. Bats have a tendency to be symptomless carriers. Infected bat droppings are not suspected of transmitting the disease. However, people may be affected by another disease, histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus that grows in soil and material contaminated with droppings from animals.
2. It's a good idea to report stray or sick animals to animal control. It's also wise to feed your pet indoors, keep trash cans tightly locked and avoid contact with both live and dead wildlife.
3. Keeping pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccine is the best protection.
