UPDATE: Raw Pet Food Manufacturer Expands Recall Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

UPDATE (August 22) — Radagast Pet Food, Inc. has expanded its voluntary recall to include an additional quantity of Rad Cat Raw Diet across all varieties. The updated list of recalled pet food products has the best-by dates of October 19, 2018 through December 3, 2019.

All of these additional products have been recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recall includes products within the following lot number sequential range: starting with and including lot number 62763, through and including lot number 63101. Both the lot number and best-by date can be found on the bottom of each container. These products were shipped to distributors in the United States and Canada between May 10, 2017 and August 9, 2018.

According to the FDA, Radagast Pet Food has identified a source of potential contamination in its facility and has taken proactive measures to remove the source. The company is confident that this expanded recall will capture any additional lots that may be at risk of contamination.

(July 9) — Radagast Pet Food, Inc., a raw cat food manufacturer based in Portland, Oregon, has voluntarily recalled 3 lots of its Rad Cat Raw Diet Free-Range Chicken Recipe due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, and 1 lot of its Rad Cat Raw Diet Pasture-Raised Venison Recipe due to potential Shiga toxin-producing E coli O121 contamination. This is the company's second recall this year.

All lots of both recalled products were shipped to US distributers in May and June.

Humans infected with Listeria may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, aches, and fever, as well as more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, and even death.

Shiga toxin-producing E coli O121 is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause illness in humans that come in contact with raw pet foods contaminated with this bacterium. E coli O121 can cause symptoms such as stomach cramps, mild fever, vomiting, and diarrhea in humans. Although E coli O121 is not known to cause illness in cats, the FDA has a zero-tolerance rule for pathogens in pet food, as humans that handle the food may become infected. Infected cats can also become carriers of E coli O121 and transfer the bacterium to the home environment.

No pet or human illnesses have been reported in connection with any of the recalled products.
