James Gaynor, DVM, DACVA, DACVPM, pain specialist at Peak Performance Veterinary Group in Frisco, Colorado, talks about the gold standard for managing osteoarthritis in dogs.
The gold standard for managing osteoarthritis is using a patient's own stem cells and injecting them into their joint for optimal pain control, Dr. Gaynor says. There are virtually no side effects because we're taking their own stem cells, and often times a single injection can last 18 or more months.
He says that after injection, one-third of dogs require no more anti-inflammatories, one-third require a decreased amount and one-third remain the same.
