This veterinary nurse talk about the most important thing for recognizing and treating pain in cats.
Pet owner education is the most important thing for recognizing and treating pain in cats, says Alison Gottlieb, BS, CVT, VTS (ECC), ICU veterinary nurse and education coordinator for CARES (Center for Animal Referral and Emergency Services) in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
According to Gottlieb, seeing chronic pain in cats is virtually impossible to see in a clinic setting. Cats don't act normally when they come to the veterinary clinic, so the veterinarian won't often see those normal signs of pain. This is why educating pet owners on different pain signs to look for is the best way to get these cats treated, she says.
