Learn how to balance work and hobbies with Jimmy Barr, DVM, DACVECC

In an interview with dvm360, BluePearl chief medical officer Jimmy Barr, DVM, DACVECC, shared his tips for building resiliency in veterinary medicine and how to prioritize your well-being. Barr suggested that it is important to make time for your hobbies to have a passion outside of work. This can ultimately lead to a better balance and allow you to show up to work more mentally ready.

The following is a partial transcript of the video.

Jimmy Barr, DVM, DACVECC: Resiliency means different things to different people. And I think that that's the part that whenever you're thinking through about what it is that fills your cup, that's the thing I would sort of focus in on and try to make sure that you take care of yourself and make that a priority. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't work really hard while you're on shift, and take care of pets—I mean, of course, you should do that. That's what we're all there for. That's our passion, and the reason why we chose veterinary medicine. But, at the same time, making sure that you really do spend time, if you like hiking, or if you like working out, if you like painting, or whatever it is, do those things that sort of get you mentally ready for the next thing.
