Veterinarians often struggle with DEA regulations and controlled substance compliance, but why?
Veterinarians are often so focused on patient care and client service that they sometimes overlook the critical details of controlled substance management. So how can the veterinary industry make DEA regulation management easier for all?
During an interview with dvm360, Peter Weinstein, DVM, MBA, and Kelley Detweiler, share why they think following and understanding DEA regulations is a challenge for veterinary professionals, and how educating students while still in veterinary school could make things smoother for professionals.
Below is a partial transcript
Kelley Detweiller: As someone who's teaching, where are the gaps?
Peter Weinstein, DVM, MBA: The gaps do start at veterinary school, because if you don't have a clue when you're coming out of school about your requirements and expectation, it's hard to understand the oversight, and we don't. We're not likely, as a new graduate, to go and get education and control substance compliance, because we're more likely to try to figure out how to be a better dermatologist or dentist or surgeon, etc, from that standpoint. So this really does need to start at the university level and oversee the importance of it, and explain the importance of it, not just from a pharmaceutical standpoint, but from a regulatory compliance standpoint
Detweiler: Absolutely.
