You didn't even think that many kids, pets and adults could fit into one of your exam rooms, but tada-there they are. And the client/pet owner is too overwhelmed, too distracted, too tired, too everything to be able to understand the findings, the diagnosis or the treatment.
That's where you as the understanding veterinarian come in, says Sarah Wooten, DVM, an associate at Sheep Draw Veterinary Hospital in Greeley, Colorado.
"If I have a lot to explain, I usually say, 'Hey, I have kids of my own. I get it. Is it OK if I call you on the phone some time later to talk about this?'" Wooten says. "I send them out of the clinic with written discharge instructions. And I tell them, 'Don't start the medication until we talk on the phone.'"
