Madison, Wis.-Fewer and fewer students are entering veterinary school with a background on the farm, but a teaching herd at the University of Wisconsin (UW) will help students gain a better understanding of dairy management.
The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) just donated $5,000to the UW's School of Veterinary Medicine to help support the 52-cow dairyteaching herd. This teaching herd is one of four nationwide to give studentsexperience in managing a herd of cows.
Dr. Randy Schuett, WVMA president, says, "It used to be that farmkids would go into large animal practice. But the farm kids aren't the onesyou find in vet school anymore."
The herd is operated as a self-supporting commercial farm, so studentslearn concerns of their future clients, including milk pricing and managementcosts.
