CHEYENNE, WYO. - 5/2/06 - The Cheyenne Animal Shelter is under a self-imposed quarantine following an outbreak of canine influenza.
Shelter staff veterinarian Dr. Jim Hathaway detailed a plan to deal with the outbreak during a public meeting at the Cheyenne City Council Chambers.
"This is a bad disease that came into the shelter and is not the fault of the shelter staff or anyone else," Hathaway says. "The plan we've developed is aimed at containing the outbreak."
Yesterday's meeting included public awareness strategies for stray animals, says Animal Shelter Board President Tim LaHiff.
"We have set up a temporary off-site shelter for strays that are picked up by our animal control officers to separate them from the rest of the animal shelter canine population, LaHiff says in a prepared statement."
