Brian Sutherland, DVM, DACVS-SA, is a graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a rotating internship at Michigan State University, a surgery specialty internship at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Centers, and a surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He achieved board certification in small animal surgery in 2016 and started his career in private referral practice in Northern Virginia. While he was responsible for a broad range of orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, he was drawn to the world of cardiology and cardiac surgery. In 2018 he was accepted into a fellowship in cardiac surgery at Colorado State University, where he was trained in operative cardiac surgery including the use of cardiopulmonary bypass, as well as advanced cardiac imaging and catheter-based intervention. Since finishing his fellowship, Sutherland has been focused on surgical management of structural heart disease in veterinary patients. Outside of the hospital, Sutherland is an avid mountain biker and aviation enthusiast.
