In August, a California appeals court denied a dog owner damages for emotional distress and loss of companionship in a veterinary malpractice case. A federal court in Vermont recently issued a similar ruling. Despite new calls for legislation on this issue by some politicians, the veterinary profession wants to fight off a spike in litigation. Proposed midlevel role poses unacceptable risks
