El Paso Animal Hospital was founded in 1978 by Gary Oehmke, DVM, and named after the original name of Derby, Kansas by founder Gary Oehmke, DVM. After 10 years as a solo practitioner, Jeff Herod, DVM, joined the practice and over the next 30 years the practice grew, according to the Hospital Design Competition entry. In 2016, it became clear that the building that currently housed El Paso Animal Hospital was too small for the volume of traffic it was receiving, so a new practice was set in motion.
As a walk-in only practice that's also open in evenings for emergency cases, the veterinary hospital's needs are a bit different than a traditional clinic, they wrote. At any given time, the hospital can have as many as 25 or 30 clients waiting, so the team needed large waiting areas and separate check-in and check-out areas to improve traffic flow. This helped with their overall goal of providing better customer experience and a better working environment for the team.
Eight exam rooms and a large, well-lit treatment area gives doctors and team members plenty of space to work, while improved lines of sight help with patient care, the team wrote in its entry. El Paso Animal Hospital was also named a Merit Award winner in the 2019 dvm360 Hospital Design Competition and will be featured in an article here on dvm360.com in June. I can't say enough about these men and women and their staff. They are kind, gentle, caring, fun and much more! They are like an extended family to me and my animal kids. They take care of everything from a pet mouse, to a parrot or a duck with a broken leg in one of my cases, as well as snakes and other critters. They don't do large farm animals, but that's about it. Love this place beyond words!”
