Wal-Mart is honoring veterinary prescriptions and offering customers in 49 states (excluding North Dakota) a 30-day supply of more than 300 generic drugs for just $4. At press time, Target was matching Wal-Mart's prescription price at most locations. Costco recently dropped a $4-for-30-day-supply plan and went to $10 for 100 pills because the company was losing money on the deal.
Dr. Dennis Cloud of St. Louis did some price checking on 21-day supplies of generic drugs (see chart below). He found that Wal-Mart's prices were significantly cheaper than Walgreens or his own practice's pharmacy. He thinks these $4 prescriptions could change the prescription-drug market and affect veterinarians in a big way.
