Germantown, Md.

-- The American College of Veterinary Surgeons added 65 new diplomates who passed the latest board-certification exam, the ACVS announced.

The examination, given in February in San Diego, consists of written, case-based and practical portions and can only be taken after a veterinarian completes four years of training beyond veterinary school.

The additional training includes a one-year rotating internship and a supervised three-year surgical residency, during which the veterinarian works with board-certified specialists. The resident must also demonstrate a commitment to contributing to the scientific literature and maintaining a moral and ethical standing in the profession.

There are 1,403 ACVS board-certified veterinary surgeons, about 65 percent of whom are small-animal surgeons and 35 percent large-animal surgeons. Board certification has been attained by about 1.6 percent of the 86,000 veterinarians in the United States.

"Successfully completing the ACVS certifying examination is a personal and professional accomplishment by these former residents," says Larry R. Bramlage, chair of the ACVS Board of Regents. "We as an organization, and I personally, wish to congratulate these new diplomates on the culmination of their training, the mastery of the certifying examination. I wish them all a rewarding and fruitful career as a specialist in veterinary surgery."
