Animal Health Companies Donate to Hurricane Harvey Relief

While more than one million people have been driven from their homes in Texas as a result of Hurricane Harvey, thousands of pets have also been displaced. And, as the aftermath begins to set in, individuals and companies around the country are stepping in by donating money, supplies, time and effort.

Here are just a few of the animal health companies that have opened their wallets to help pets in need from areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Boehringer Ingelheim: The Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation donated $25,000 to the Texas A&M Foundation to help animals impacted by Harvey. It’s also contributing over $100,000 to Americares and Direct Relief International.

Eli Lilly: The pharmaceutical company’s foundation contributed $250,000 to the Red Cross. It will also match employee donations to the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Nationwide: The Nationwide Foundation has given $500,000 to Red Cross Disaster Relief.

PetSmart: PetSmart Charities initially pledged to give $1 million to help animal welfare agencies working to rescue, relocate and care for pets that have become homeless due to the storm, but the company just doubled its donation to $2 million. Some of the welfare agencies that will benefit from these funds include the Houston SPCA, the SPCA of Texas, Rescue Bank and Houston PetSet.

Henry Schein: The world’s largest provider of dental, animal and medical health care products and services donated $500,000 in cash and health care products to relief organizations working in affected areas.

American Veterinary Medical Association: The AVMA donated $100,000 to relief efforts via grants administered by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. The association is also offering reimbursement grants for veterinarians volunteering to assist.

Patterson Companies: The veterinary and dental medical supply company has committed a match of up to $50,000 for employee contributions to the American Red Cross in response to Hurricane Harvey. The company’s animal health team has also been supporting Houston-area veterinary hospitals and animal health relief efforts since the beginning of the hurricane.

Petco Foundation: The foundation has committed $2.3 million in product donations and grant support to almost 20 organizations affected by Hurricane Harvey.

American Kennel Club: The AKC Humane Fund donated $10,000 through its “Sandy Fund” directly to the city of Houston. Also, the AKC Reunite Canine Support and Relief Fund is raising money to support the animal shelters caring for displaced animals through a challenge grant. Donations made to the group until September 20 will be matched up to $10,000.

U.S. Equestrian Federation: The USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund has raised more than $150,000 for horses impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Nestlé Purina PetCare: The nutrition company donated $25,000 to Greater Good to support people and pets in the Houston area. According to the company, the funds will be used to support immediate rescue efforts, much-needed supplies and rebuilding initiatives.
