Salt Lake City, Utah — The number of applications was twice the number of available seats for the inaugural year of Utah State University's (USU) new veterinary program, which is in collaboration with Washington State University.
Forty-two students submitted applications to fill the 20 seats available, reports Rusty Stott, clinical assistant director at USU.
Another 10 seats are being reserved for out-of-state students, who will apply directly to Washington State University.
"For me, I think it's a great application cycle," says Stott. "I'm ecstatic we have slightly over double what we can expect."
A high applicant turnout allows USU to admit the best candidates, he adds. Interviews for the new program will start January. Those admitted will begin classes at USU in August 2012, completing the first two years of their veterinary training in Utah and the second two years at Washington State.
