Schaumburg, Ill. - 9/14/07 - Multiple brands of jerky treats manufactured in China have been making pets sick, reports the American Veterinary Medical Association. No deaths have been reported, but symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently testing the treats for a contaminant, but melamine - one of the chemicals responsible for the massive pet food recall earlier this year - has been ruled out.
Although no brand or product list of affected treats is yet available, all contaminated products can be categorized as jerky treats from China. AVMA cautions pet owners to use their best judgment.
On Aug. 22, Wal-Mart released a statement that they had pulled two brands of Chinese-manufactured treats from their shelves, but no official recalls have been issued.
The AVMA is monitoring the situation and will provide updated information on their web site, www.avma.org, as soon as it is available.
