The AVMA Executive Board has passed a plan for immediate implementation of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC). The committee's charge: drafting overarching animal welfare principles applicable to the veterinary profession. The AVMA will use these principles as a basis to develop and judge proposed and existing animal welfare policies, resolutions, and actions. The executive board initially planned to implement the AWAC in July 2007, but criticism that the association wasn't adequately addressing welfare issues prompted the group to move forward as soon as possible.
