A total of $200,000 will be donated to offer relief for pets in need, plus veterinary and animal welfare groups within the war-torn area.
The charitable arm of the American Veterinary Medical Association—the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF)—is responding to dire needs for relief in Ukraine by donating a $100,000 grant from Merck Animal Health to help pets in need by providing support to veterinary and animal welfare organizations in this devastated nation and surrounding countries. Additionally, the AVMF will be matching the donation from Merck Animal Health with a gift of $100,000.
"Merck Animal Health is proud to team up with the AVMF and hope these funds go a long way to protect the health, welfare, and safety of pets in Ukraine and neighboring countries," said Christine Royal, DVM, associate vice president, US companion animal and equine, Merck Animal Health, in an association release.1
According to the release,1 the donation will offer food, medical care, disaster relief, and emergency support for veterinary and additional groups to protect animal welfare and care providers' welfare. The AVMF will oversee the distribution of the funding, and 100% of the donations will go towards helping those in need and animal care.
The AVMA is urging its nearly 100,000 members and the public to consider donating to the AVMF to support these efforts.
“Many organizations, including veterinary medical facilities, animal shelters, and animal rescue groups in Ukraine and neighboring countries, are courageously providing care to people and animals affected by the crisis,” expressed Jose Arce, DVM, president of the AVMA.
“But they can’t do it alone, so we encourage AVMA members and the public to contribute to our relief efforts. Together, we can make a difference and support people, animals, and those who care for them," he added.
