Schaumburg, Ill. — More than 250 veterinarians and others plan to roll up their sleeves to revive four New Orleans animal shelters during next month's American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) annual convention.

The clean-up, scheduled July 17-18, is part of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation's (AVMF) efforts to give back to a city that still bears scars from Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers in town for the AVMA show at the Morial Convention Center will paint, clean and provide other services to rebuild and rehabilitate the damaged animal shelters.

Work will be done at Plaquemines Parish Animal Control, St. Charles Animal Shelter and Jefferson West Parish Animal Shelter. Plans to build an outdoor recreational area for cats at Jefferson East Parish Animal Shelter also are under way.

AVMF reports the number of volunteers, coming from 20 states and at least three foreign countries, is nearing capacity, although limited space to help remains. Those who cannot physically lend a hand but would like to contribute are encouraged to make a financial donation to AVMF to pay for supplies. Bayer Animal Health has earmarked $25,000 to jumpstart the rehabilitation efforts.
