Calgary, Alberta

-- The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) will hold an open house Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. for the public to tour its new Clinical Skills Building on Spy Hill Campus. The facility opens to veterinary students in September.

The new building will allow up to 120 students to learn clinical, diagnostic and animal-handling skills, according to the college, even though UCVM does not provide any veterinary service directly to the public. Instead, students learn through collaborations with existing veterinary practices in Alberta. The new facility will provide an on-campus location for students to watch as area veterinarians come to consult with UCVM faculty members.

UCVM is Canada╒s fifth accredited veterinary college and was established in 2004, graduating it first class in 2006. The first DVM class started in September 2008, and UCVM plans to expand it total faculty numbers by about 50 percent over the next several years through collaborations with other veterinary institutions like Western College of Veterinary Medicine, the school says.
