SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - 10/14/2005 - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation prohibiting intra-cardiac puncture on conscious animals as a form of euthanasia in the state.
A.B. 1426 deems "heart shots" on conscious animals an act of animal cruelty and a violation of the state's penal code. The measure was supported by the California Veterinary Medical Association and passed with little opposition, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports.
