Ontario, Canada - 2/13/08 - A small-animal teaching hospital will be built on the campus of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), the oldest in Canada, with the help of a $9.5-million donation from the Ontario province.

With increasing owner expectations for veterinary care, the new hospital aims to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience providing practical, daily care for household pets, says the college.

Fueled mostly by specialty referral cases, Ontario's current teaching hospital does not often handle the basic-care cases seen through daily practice.

"The center will give our student veterinarians unprecedented and invaluable learning and training opportunities and bring vital infrastructure improvements to the entire OVC campus," says Dean Elizabeth Stone. "We hope to shape the future of veterinary education in primary health care."
