Intervet's Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) is the first and only insulin approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to manage canine diabetes.

Vetsulin normally exhibits peaks of activity — one rapid, one delayed — allowing continuous utilization of glucose over time to support the body's basic functions.

Vetsulin is more compatible with a dog's metabolic system than biosynthetic human insulin, the company says.

Vetsulin can stabilize the dog and establish a daily routine for pet and owner. The pet should be monitored routinely to follow the evolution of its diabetes and determine required changes to its requirements.

Vetsulin should not be used in dogs that have an allergy to pork or pork products, and is contraindicated during periods of hypoglycemia, the company says.
