This is a good option, especially given your suspicion that this dog has arthritis and may need NSAID therapy. Bile acid testing is a sensitive test of liver function, and, while it may not identify the etiology, elevated bile acids would confirm that there is impaired function and justify further work-up (i.e. liver biopsy).
