Since normal animals at any given time of the day can have a low resting cortisol concentration, you need to evaluate his adrenal function with an ACTH stimulation test to definitively diagnose Addison's disease. Treatment would be instituted once the diagnosis is made or the post-ACTH stimulation cortisol concentration has been drawn.
