Client handout: Take a hike (with your dog)

Article

A lack of preparation can make the great outdoors not so great. Give your veterinary clients a guide to keeping their pup safe on the trail.

There's no shortage of stores, magazines and books filled with hiking advice and “necessities” for people, so it stands to reason that canine hikers might need some special considerations too. With this in mind, we reached out to veterinarian, outdoorswoman and Colorado resident Sarah J. Wooten, DVM, for tips on keeping trailblazing pups safe.

The resulting client handout includes information about:

  • what to do pre-hike (e.g. visit you, the veterinarian!)

  • what to pack (including first aid supplies)

  • how to protect against parasites

  • emergency planning

  • trail etiquette (e.g. bring and use poop bags).
