At the age of 14, this is a geriatric patient. It is generally accepted that geriatric patients have limited reserve and will not tolerate challenges as well as younger patients. Diligence is important in all older patients, including those with normal physical examination findings and laboratory test results. This dog also has evidence of mild cardiac disease, which poses additional anesthetic concerns. And because extractions are anticipated, pain management during and after the procedure is another area to address in the anesthesia protocol.
